Hello everyone and welcome back to another blog post. So, you have bought Hollow Knight. You have seen the beautiful art, heard the haunting soundtrack, and maybe watched a speedrunner make the game look like a gentle stroll through a park. You boot it up, swing your nail at a few crawling bugs, and think, “This is manageable.” Then the game drops you into a forgotten kingdom with zero directions, steals your money when you die, and actively laughs at your attempts to heal. The game teaches you how to swing your nail and then promptly abandons you in a fungal wasteland. Here is what your imaginary tutorial should have covered. These are the things the game will not tell you, not because it forgot, but because it genuinely seems to enjoy watching you suffer.
1. The Map is Not Your Friend. It’s a Test.
Welcome to Hallownest, where cartography is a luxury reserved for the brave or the lucky. The game gives you a map for the first area, the Forgotten Crossroads, and you might think you are set. You are not set. The mistake is assuming the map updates itself automatically. The fix is that you need to buy a Quill from Iselda’s shop in Dirtmouth. Without it, your map is a static piece of paper. You will be wandering around, thinking you have explored a new room, only to realize your map is as useless as a nail made of cheese. Also, do not forget to equip the Wayward Compass charm if you do not want to play a game of Where is Waldo with your own character on the map. The game’s mapping system exists to make you feel lost. It is designed that way. The map system reinforces this by making you earn clarity instead of handing it to you. Stop expecting handouts.
2. The Pogo is Not Just a Cute Name. It’s Survival.
You know how you can swing your nail down? That is not just for hitting enemies on the ground. It is for bouncing on them. The mistake is avoiding this mechanic because it seems tricky. The fix is that you must master the pogo jump. By attacking downwards while in mid-air, you can bounce off enemies and even hazardous surfaces like spiked floors. This is the single most versatile movement tool in the game. It allows you to reach secret areas, bypass difficult platforming sections, and deal damage to enemies while staying out of their attack range. The down-stroke is easily the most effective tool in your arsenal. With a little practice you will get it. Learn it. Love it. Pogo everything.
3. You Have Magic. Use It, You Fool.
You get the Vengeful Spirit spell early on. It shoots a big, wispy projectile that does decent damage. For some reason, new players hoard SOUL like it is going out of style, saving it all for healing. The mistake is only using SOUL to heal. The fix is that spells are powerful. They do significantly more damage than your basic nail. Take the Hornet fight, for example. Your starter nail does a paltry five damage per hit. Hornet has 225 hit points. That is forty-five hits. A single Vengeful Spirit does fifteen damage. That is three nail hits’ worth of damage in one cast, and it is ranged. Stop whacking bosses with your little needle and start blasting them with spells. Pair this with the Shaman Stone charm to make your spells even more devastating.
4. Those Big Stupid Enemies? Just Run.
You know the ones. The big, hulking brutes that seem to block the only path forward. They look menacing, and they hit like a truck. The game is baiting you into a fight you do not need to take. The mistake is trying to fight every enemy you see. The fix is that you can just run past them. If you drop into an opening area and head right, you will soon come up against a huge dude with a huge club. He seems impossible to beat, but you can just take a hit, then run past him. Sometimes, running is smarter than fighting. It is a valid strategy, not cowardice. Hallownest is full of enemies that are just not worth the time and health. Preserve your resources for bosses and critical exploration.
5. Heal When You Can. Not When You Want.
Healing takes time. You sit down, channel your SOUL, and slowly regain health. The problem is that enemies in this game are not polite enough to wait for you to finish. The mistake is trying to heal immediately after taking damage. The fix is that you should only heal during attack windows. When an enemy is locked in a long attack animation or there is a safe distance between you, that is your moment to heal. Dodging the boss’s attacks and then healing in the brief pause afterwards is a core skill. Most players die because they heal at bad times, not because they did not heal enough. Be patient. Wait for the opening. A good strategy is to spend a boss fight only dodging for a while to learn its patterns before you even think about swinging your nail.
6. Geo is For Spending. Hoarders Get Punished.
Geo is the currency of Hallownest. You get it from killing enemies and finding it in the world. You also lose all of it if you die twice in a row without retrieving your Shade. The mistake is holding onto your Geo for a better item later. The fix is that you should spend your Geo. Dying with a huge stash is a recipe for heartbreak. Buy map markers from Iselda. Buy the Quill. Buy charms and charm notches from Salubra. Spend it on anything useful. Greed kills more players than difficult bosses. Hoarding is how you lose everything.
7. Charms Are Your Build. Experiment.
Charms are the closest thing Hollow Knight has to an RPG skill tree. They can give you more health, increase your attack range, or even let your minions fight for you. The mistake is sticking with the same two or three charms for the whole game. The fix is that you must experiment. The game encourages you to mix and match to find combinations that suit your playstyle. For a deeper dive into what works best for you, you can explore the comprehensive Charms section of our pillar guide. And do not forget you need Charm Notches to equip more of them. Some are bought from Salubra, others are found hidden in the world. The difference between a brutal boss fight and a manageable one often comes down to your charm build.
Hollow Knight is hard. It is intentionally, beautifully hard. But it is not unfair. It just expects you to learn its rules the hard way. The game does not hold your hand because it respects you, and also because it hates you. By mastering the map, learning to pogo, using your spells, and understanding when to fight and when to run, you will stop being prey and start being the hunter. Now get out there and show Hallownest who is boss.
