Hello everyone and welcome back to another blog. Today we’ll be talking about an awesome city-building game that dared to change the rules and succeeded masterfully. In the world of indie games, one of my favorite genres is city-building, specially cities skylines (reviews from first and second game coming soon) and even though I haven’t had a chance to play the fist game, with Frostpunk 2, I was happy to learn that this could become one of my favorites and I’m eager to play the first entry as well.

This game, as I understand, builds upon the strengths of its predecessor while introducing innovative gameplay mechanics and a more nuanced exploration of societal themes, solidifying its position as a leading title in the survival and city-building genre.
A Frozen World in Crisis
Now, for people who are not familiar with the sci-fi term “punk” let me assure you that this game is not about a bunch of punk musicians frozen in a river or something. In science fiction, there’s a subgenre that, one could say, started this branch and that is cyberpunk (not to confuse with the game Cyberpunk 2077), a dystopian future where technology has taken over our lives and not necessarily for the better. In this genre, there is a clear aesthetic, everything is highly technological and highly advanced. Some famous examples of the genre include the movies Blade Runner, Total Recall and the anime film Akira.
From the cyberpunk genre, which emerged in the 80’s emerged multiple media like video games, comic books and novels. The genre started to branch out into other “punk” subgenres, which include steampunk, a future where steam and machinery from the victorian era is the main tech way of advancements, solarpunk, very similar to steampunk, but with a focus on renewable energy and others like desertpunk, oceanpunk, apocalypsepunk and a big etcetera.
Following this genre, Frostpunk 2 is set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a global ice age. Players take on the role of the leader of a struggling city, tasked with ensuring its survival amidst the harsh conditions. The city is surrounded by a frozen wasteland, with limited resources and constant threats from the elements.
Your city is a fragile ecosystem, constantly battling against the harsh elements and the ever-present threat of starvation. You must carefully manage your resources, build essential infrastructure, and make difficult decisions that will shape the fate of your community. Every choice you make has far-reaching consequences.
Gameplay and Mechanics: Building a Civilization in the Frozen Wasteland
Frostpunk 2 offers a deep and engaging gameplay experience that combines city-building, survival, and strategy elements. Alternatively, you can construct wind turbines, which are more sustainable but less efficient in the harsh winter conditions. The choice you make will impact your city’s ability to withstand the freezing temperatures and keep your citizens warm.
As your city grows, you’ll also need to address the issue of food production. You can build greenhouses to cultivate crops, but this requires a constant supply of heat and water. Alternatively, you can send hunting parties into the frozen wilderness, but this carries the risk of losing valuable members of your community. The decision of how to feed your people will have a direct impact on their health and morale.
Another critical decision is how to maintain order within your city. You can implement strict laws and punishments to deter crime, but this may lead to discontent among your citizens. Alternatively, you can foster a more democratic society, allowing people to have a say in how the city is governed. The choice you make will affect the overall well-being and cohesion of your community.
