Explore a Twisted World of Suffering in Blasphemous: A Review

blasphemous

Hello again! Sorry for the late post, I was away in the motherland for a quick vacay, but now I’m back and ready to review a new game: Blasphemous. Called by many as the Elden Ring of indie games, Blasphemous is a dark and challenging game that will change your perspective of how much a side scroller game can test you and your abilities.

Blasphemous is a platforming action video game developed by the Spanish studio The Game Kitchen and published by Team17. It was released in 2019 for various platforms, including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The game is set in the land of Cvstodia, a world inspired by Spanish folklore and mythology. The player controls a warrior known as the Penitent One, who is on a quest to find and defeat the source of a supernatural curse that has befallen the land. The game features challenging gameplay mechanics, such as precise platforming, intense combat, and exploration of a vast interconnected world.

The game’s themes and visuals are heavily influenced by Catholicism and its iconography, and it features a dark and atmospheric tone. The game’s story and characters also deal with themes of sin, redemption, and religious fanaticism. The game has received generally positive reviews for its challenging gameplay, atmospheric visuals, and engaging story.

Blasphemous

The gameplay of Blasphemous can be described as a 2D action-platformer with challenging combat and exploration elements. Players control the Penitent One, a warrior who can use a variety of weapons, such as swords, spears, and ranged attacks, to defeat enemies. One of the most fun aspects of combat is the fast-paced style and the timing and precision to dodge enemy attacks and strike back make the defeat of your enemies so enjoyable.

As players progress through the game’s interconnected world, they will encounter challenging platforming sections that require precise jumps and timing to navigate. The game also features a Metroidvania-style map system, allowing you to explore and discover new areas and secrets, adding to the replay value

As many souls like games, you can save your progress with a system of checkpoints called Prie Dieu, where players can save their progress, restore health, and acquire new abilities or upgrades. These upgrades can include new combat moves, health or magic upgrades, and new traversal abilities, such as double-jumping or wall-climbing.

Another highlight of the game is the story. The game’s characters and bosses are memorable and well-designed, each with their own backstory and motivations. Most of the characters you encounter along the game have secretive and eerie personalities, which gives the ambient of the game a dark but immersive tone. Lovers of horror movies will love to submerge in the vast world.

The game also features various endings, depending on the player’s choices and actions throughout the game, adding replay value and encouraging players to explore the game’s multiple paths and secrets.

In addition to its challenging gameplay and immersive world, Blasphemous also features an impressive and haunting soundtrack that sets the tone for the game’s dark and melancholic atmosphere. The music is a blend of orchestral and choral elements, creating an eerie and otherworldly soundscape that complements the game’s visuals and story.

Blasphemous is a well-crafted and unique game that offers a challenging and immersive gameplay experience, with a hauntingly beautiful world and an intriguing story that will keep players engaged and invested in the game’s world and characters.
